Tanita Tikaram: Valentine Heart 

I grew up listening to Tanita Tikaram’s album Ancient Heart because my parents had a copy. I hadn’t heard any of her later albums until recently and they don’t speak to me in the same way. Tanita is a talented musician and lyricist and Valentine Heart is one of the most beautiful songs off Ancient Heart, her first album. I’m still stunned that she released this album when she was 19 years old, writing all the lyrics and music - the days before manufactured pop princesses who don’t write their own songs have an entire team to carefully control their image. I grew up thinking Tanita was older, weathered by experience and heartbreak. I listened to her as a little girl but felt like her at nineteen too.
